Show Notes: 019 - Jumping the Shark
| We're back! This week, Sam and Lani discuss jumping the shark - how to do it, how not to do it, and... well... what it is. For those of you who are worried, it doesn't involve any actual sharks. We may drink a lot of wine, but we're not crazy. We manage to not answer the question of the week while encouraging cats with bad grammar. Also, we go long. Really long. But that's because we're making up for all those weeks we missed, and not because we can't shut up. Right? Riiiiiiiggggggghhhhhht. |

Sam had a Mondoro Asti from Italy. $14 a bottle. 7.5% alcohol.
Wine notes: Fine and constant, light straw yellow delicately sweet with right balance of acidity. Rich, intense, aromatic, fruity, with traces of acacia and orange blossoms, and scent of wild mountain honey..

Lani had a Brut Zero Cava from Spain. $10 a bottle. 12% alcohol.
Wine notes: The Brut Zero pops out with a refreshing blend of apple, pear, and citrus aromas that carry through from the nose to the finish.

Shout-outs & Shout-offs to:
Sam: Sam’s beta-readers, Patti & Jill
Lani: Lani's in-laws, and Dot, Jean and Julia!
Listener question:
From Eileen Rendahl: When layering in subplots in a manuscript, is there a specific formula? Should you have, say, two scenes about the main plot and then one about the subplot? How much subplot is too much? How much is not enough?

Show Notes: 017 - Prologues & Epilogues. Who needs 'em?
| Description: It's Will Write For Wine...the bra-burning episode! Sam and Lani disagree about prologues and epilogues, screw up both the D and E block, and get on their soap boxes over the marginalization of women writers. We get political! And a little drunk! All in all, not a bad episode. Oh - and we insult Michiko Kakutani, and are grateful that she has no idea who we are. |

Sam had a 2004 Smoking Loon Syrah from CA. $10, 13.5%
Wine notes: With inky purple color, this wine reveals scents of wild strawberry, mocha, and caramel with touches of sage and rosemary. The flavors burst through with intense blueberry and strawberry jam notes wrapped around rich French oak and finishing with touches of milk chocolate, sweetened cranberries, and savory herbs.
Shout-outs & Shout-offs to:
Lani: Shout-off to the Olive Garden, for the 400% markup on your wine. Greedy bastards! And a Shout-out to the Smart Bitches for pointing out Erica Jong’s call to arms for female writers to protest their ghettoization in the world of literature.Sam: Shout-out to the fabulous Adrienne Pierce. To Barbara for the great online games site.
Listener question:
From Stephanie Kurze: Everyone talks about how important scene and sequel is but I have never heard any one actually explain what it is or how to make sure you're doing it properly. Can you help or do I need to know the super secret hand shake first?

Michiko Kakutani, you are great, we love you, yes totally sucking up. Erica Jong, sorry but it's your battle. Harry Potter fans, do not email us unless you have a damn good argument.

I'm always hearing about the mechanics of plotting - doing so on note cards (huh?) and now Sam, with the spreadsheets (interesting and speaks to my little spreadsheet heart).... but I'm afraid I don't get it. How do you do this organized plotting? I'm a mess, it seems - a pants-er who really, really wants to be more of a plotter. And how about books to help with plotting, any recommendations for that?

Lisa Gardineer from southeast Pennsylvania:
Ever since discovering my own ability to write and dream up plots, yada, yada, yada, I've been swamped with characters in my head. In the two years since I've had my Enlightenment, I have come up with no less than 15 books. That sounds all well and good, but my mind can never center on just one. Every morning I have twentysome fictional people at war in my head demanding attention. I've been flip flopping back and forth from plot to plot, but do you have any suggestions on focusing? has this happened to either of you?
