Show Notes: 020 - Writer Improv: Creating a Hero

Description: This week on Will Write For Wine... it's Writing Improv: Creating a Hero! And this podcast is one you don't want to miss because it's just that bad. We screw up every block, not just the D. We insult ferret people, Trekkies, Buffy fans and the military. We try to build a romantic suspense and fight about it. But damnit, we had fun. And hopefully, so will you! If not, don't complain. We're cranky and we've been drinking.

What are we drinking?

Lani had a 2004 Stoneleigh Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc from New Zealand.
Wine notes: This wine is a ripe, full-bodied Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc that displays intense passionfruit and stone fruit aromas, with background mineral notes. The passionfruit and flinty characters are indicative of ripe Sauvignon Blanc, which the winemaker maximises with skin contact and yeast selection. The palate displays tropical fruit and passionfruit with a touch of dry grass. It is full and rounded with a succulent mouth-feel and viscosity, balanced with crisp acidity.
13.5% alcohol, and it's $12 a bottle.

Sam had a 2004 Sierra Cantabria Rioja from Spain.
Wine notes: Medium ruby-colored, it offers pleasant aromas of Asian spice, cranberry, and red currants.
13.5% alcohol. $11.

We're back! This week, Sam and Lani discuss jumping the shark - how to do it, how not to do it, and... well... what it is. For those of you who are worried, it doesn't involve any actual sharks. We may drink a lot of wine, but we're not crazy. We manage to not answer the question of the week while encouraging cats with bad grammar. Also, we go long. Really long. But that's because we're making up for all those weeks we missed, and not because we can't shut up. Right? Riiiiiiiggggggghhhhhht.

Due to an unfortunate wine accident, Lani and Sam will not be doing a show this week or next week. But never fear, we’ll be in fine wine-drinkin’, writer-rockin’, screwin'-up-the-D-block form on August 9th.

And hey, this gives you all two weeks to think of some great questions or wine suggestions. Post ‘em here or email, and we’ll get them on the air pronto.

So until then, sleep well and dream of large women.

What are we drinking?

Sam and Lani shared a 2004 Riesling from the Buttonwood Grove Winery in New York's Finger Lakes district. $10 a bottle. 12% alcohol.
Wine notes: Buttery Notes. Full Body. Sam wanted to give it 4.5 glasses, but Lani's putting up the show notes, so Lani's 5 glass rating wins!

Shout-outs & Shout-offs to:

Sam: Shout outs to pretty much everyone who attended the RWA National Conference in Dallas last week, but with a big shout-off to the Dallas Hyatt for their horrible service.
Lani: Shout-out to her in-laws, who took the kids to Alaska so she could go on a wine-tour!

Listener question:

From Kim Hoelzi: Right now I'm in the process of editing my manuscript. How will I know when it's "done"? I keep picking at it making it better and I wondered if I'm simply avoiding sending it in. But on the other hand, I don't want to send it in before it's ready. See the dilemma?

We Recommend!

Both Lani and Sam recommend... the Cayuga Wine Trail! And additionally, Lani's adding a recommendation for Sam's Wonderful WWfW Pesto (great on fresh baked bread - yummmm!) Here's the recipe:

1 bag (or about 1 cup) of sun-dried tomatoes
1 small can (or about 1/4 cup) of black olives or kalamata olives (no pits)
4 large cloves of fresh garlic
good olive oil
crusty bread

1) Peel garlic and place in food processor
2) Add a bit of olive oil and run processor to chop up garlic
3) Add olives and run processor to chop lightly
4) Add sun-dried tomatoes and more olive oil
5) Run processor until all ingredients are chopped and mixed well (don't overprocess)
6) Add salt to taste
7) Put in a container and set aside for a few hours to combine flavors (do not refrigerate)
8) Smear on crusty bread or use with dipping oil

Taking a wine break

Hey all you WWfW-ers out there!

Due to an unfortunate wine accident, Lani and Sam will not be doing a show this week. But never fear, we’ll be in fine wine-drinkin’, writer-rockin’, screwin'-up-the-D-block form by next week.

And hey, this gives you all another week to think of some great questions or wine suggestions. Post ‘em here or email, and we’ll get them on the air pronto.

So until then, sleep well and dream of large women.

Show Notes: 017 - Prologues & Epilogues. Who needs 'em?

Description: It's Will Write For Wine...the bra-burning episode! Sam and Lani disagree about prologues and epilogues, screw up both the D and E block, and get on their soap boxes over the marginalization of women writers. We get political! And a little drunk! All in all, not a bad episode. Oh - and we insult Michiko Kakutani, and are grateful that she has no idea who we are.

Lani had a 2006 Principato Bianco from Italy. $29 a magnum, if you buy it at Olive Garden. $7.99 online. 11% alcohol.
Wine notes: Light. Lemony. Yummm.

Sam had a 2004 Smoking Loon Syrah from CA. $10, 13.5%
Wine notes: With inky purple color, this wine reveals scents of wild strawberry, mocha, and caramel with touches of sage and rosemary. The flavors burst through with intense blueberry and strawberry jam notes wrapped around rich French oak and finishing with touches of milk chocolate, sweetened cranberries, and savory herbs.

And French. And hopefully still listening to the show. We love you, Ambroise. Don’t tell our husbands.

Improv Night: Wiffers, We Need You!

Okay, Wiffers - we need you! Next Thursday, we're recording another writing improv at popular request! All right... so two people requested it, and one of them was me, but still. It's so much fun. Anyway, this week, we're building a heroine, so we need your help! Please e-mail suggestions for the following to improv at willwriteforwine dot com:

Genre (Romantic Suspense? Romantic Comedy? What kind of story world are we creating for our girl?)
Name (Elrod has already been used. Come up with something new. And, if possible, feminine.)
Location (Where does she live? It's a big deal. Trust us.)

Send your suggestions to improv at willwriteforwine dot com and be entered to win our fabulous prizes for June:

We need the suggestions no later than Thursday, June 14th, but the earlier the better. We don't want poor Catie scrambling at the last minute! If not for us, if not for the prizes, do it for Catie!

Lani had a 2005 Doghouse Charlie's Chard Chardonnay.
Wine notes: A youthful, playful, fruit-driven wine with refreshing aromas of juicy lemon and sweet citrus blossom. Caramel apple flavors complement creamy malolactic textures. The rich mouthfeel is well-balanced by a friendly nip of bright acidity. Vanilla nuances from malolactic fermentation wrap up with a fresh and clean finish. 13.5%, $10

Sam had a 2004 Sauvignon Blanc from Moon Mountain Vineyard in CA.
Wine notes: Crisp acidity is followed by refreshing flavors of citrus, gooseberry and a hint of kiwi. $12. 13.7%.
